Forts, stepwells and a planned old city you can actually walk

Jaipur is the easiest large Rajasthani city to travel in: the old walled city is a grid, the major forts sit on one ridge road, and the airport and railway station are both close to the centre. It rewards early starts — the light is better and the forts are far emptier before 9am.

Best time to visit Jaipur

October to March is comfortable. April to June is very hot, often above 40°C by midday. July to September brings occasional heavy rain but green surroundings and lower prices.

How to get there

Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is about 13 km from the centre. Jaipur Junction is well connected by train to Delhi (about 4.5 hours by Vande Bharat) and Ahmedabad. The Delhi–Jaipur expressway makes the drive roughly 4–5 hours.

Getting around

App cabs and autos both work well. Hiring a car with a driver for a day is common and often cheaper than several separate fort trips. The old city is best walked, with an auto between neighbourhoods.

  • Jantar Mantar — 18th-century astronomical instruments, including the world's largest stone sundial.
  • Panna Meena ka Kund — Symmetrical stepwell a short walk from Amber Fort.
  • Nahargarh Fort — Ridge-top sunset view over the whole city.

A workable 3 days in Jaipur

  1. Day 1 — City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal on foot; bazaar shopping in Johari and Bapu markets.
  2. Day 2 — Amber Fort at opening, Panna Meena ka Kund, Jal Mahal viewpoint, sunset at Nahargarh.
  3. Day 3 — Albert Hall Museum, Patrika Gate, and a day trip to Abhaneri stepwell if you have a car.

  • Summer heat is the real risk — carry water and plan indoor hours between noon and 4pm.
  • Agree auto fares before boarding or use a ride app.
  • Gem 'investment' scams targeting tourists are common; ignore unsolicited shop invitations.
